What is Upstream Suicide Prevention?

If we look at suicide like a disease, such as cancer, our goal is to intervene early, before the disease has had a chance to metastasize. This is what we mean by “Upstream Suicide Prevention.”

Our goal is to increase education, resources, and resilience throughout the community, and to identify and support youth who are most at risk. In the event a child or adolescent does become actively suicidal, we hope to have established appropriate supports already in place.

This takes all of us working together with the common goal of helping our youth and reducing suicide deaths. We also aim to provide resources and support to those bereaved by suicide loss. Suicide deaths impact our entire community.
